It really sucks when you park somewhere and some dickhead two-wheel tows your AWD car away, and you get to have your car destroyed for minor traffic offenses. This got me thinking; how come AWD cars don't have a neutral option in the center diff? It would save a lot of grief for some people out there to be able to protect the driveline in case of tow away.

Yeah I remember that video of that Gallardo getting towed, that poor car.

It adds complexity, weight and an additional failure point, all for a situation that most people will never encounter while owning their car.

Or don't get your car towed.

Don't put yourself in a situation that would get you towed?

Most new awd systems would only need a button to signal the center dif to go into neutral.

...all of which could be said about any number of technological advancements that benefit cars. How many people will actually need crumple zones, steel chassis legs and airbags?

Sometimes, that doesn't get to be your choice. Also, people don't deserve to have their cars destroyed just because they did something worthy of a tow.

...and what else? Some wiring and a clutch pack? Are we even talking about a pound worth of stuff here?

I replied with it somewhere else in this thread.

Thanks - if you live in an area with lots of supercars, doesn't it make sense that if you want to tow them, you forklift them onto a flatbed? In this case, I'm guessing a couple of differentials were destroyed, and perhaps some CV joints and associated parts. The municipality owes the owner some money unless they were blocking the entrance to an emergency room.

Witch would you rather, a broken expensive awd system or a few extra pounds.

I was always terrified of this happening in my GT-R.

Or do what my XTi owner friend does and put a sticker on your windshield saying "Do NOT TOW VEHICLE ON ALL 4 WHEELS."

Yeah, a flatbed would make a lot more sense, much less room for error.
